Our team members Paco Cardenas (UU), Ana Riesgo and Vassia Koutsouveli (both NHM) have been through the immense sponge collections at the Natural History Museum in London in the frame of various SponGES research lines. One full day was spent in the paleontology collections, looking for fossils of Geodia from the Cretaceous and Jurassic in an effort to understand when Geodia species appeared. The work included observation of isolated sponge spicules and beautiful thin sections from Jurassic rocks made from the accumulation of millions of Geodia sponge spicules. Have a look at our photogallery here for some insight into research moments!
